Paver driveways in Pakenham & Cardinia.

A paver driveway is fundamentally different to a concrete slab. Hundreds of individual paver units sit on a deep sand base over a compacted aggregate sub-base, with joint sand filling the gaps. The advantages: individual repair (lift damaged pavers, replace, re-joint), no large cracks (any movement absorbed in the joints), and visual character from the chosen pattern.

The disadvantages: weed growth in joints over years, potential individual paver settlement if base prep is rushed, and higher upfront cost ($130–$180/m² vs $80–$110 for plain concrete).

Paver materials.

• Concrete pavers (Boral, Adbri, Anchor): wide colour range, modern shapes, ~$130–$165/m².
• Clay pavers (PGH, Daniel Robertson): traditional terracotta tones, period-friendly, ~$155–$180/m².
• Permeable pavers (Boral PerVie, Adbri Eco): let stormwater through — useful where the council’s legal point of discharge is tricky. ~$160–$200/m².

Patterns.

• Herringbone (45° or 90°): strongest interlock, best for trafficked driveways. Default for new installs.
• Stretcher bond: running-brick pattern. Simpler look, fewer cuts.
• Basket-weave: heritage-friendly, more visual interest. Suits Beaconsfield period homes.
• Flemish bond: traditional, more design-led.

Base prep matters more here than for concrete.

The single biggest cause of paver failure in Pakenham is rushed base preparation. Reactive Class M clay needs 150mm compacted Class 3 crushed rock + 30mm bedding sand minimum. Skimping on either layer and the pavers will settle differentially within 3 years. We compact in 50mm lifts to 95% Mod-AASHO and don’t cut corners on the base.
