Exposed aggregate driveways in Pakenham & Cardinia Shire.
The default approved finish for almost every Cardinia growth-corridor estate covenant. Stones revealed at the surface for a textured, slip-resistant finish that hides hairline cracking — ideal for reactive-clay sites.
How exposed aggregate works.
Pour the slab, screed level, finish with a wood float, then spray on a surface retarder that delays the set of just the top 25–30mm. Six to twelve hours later (depends on temperature), high-pressure wash off the retarded paste to reveal the decorative stone. Acid-etch and seal at day 8.
Aggregate mixes that suit Pakenham.
- Castlemaine slate (grey-blue): the regional default. Ages well, pairs with most Colorbond facades. ~$115/m².
- Tasmanian black basalt: almost-black, dramatic, hides oil drips. Pairs with white/light facades. ~$130/m².
- Bunyip river pebble: warm honey-tan tones, sourced locally. Suits brick veneer + earth-tone homes. ~$120/m².
- Cowra granite mix: pale, modern, contemporary. Care needed for oil staining. ~$140/m².
- Custom blended (2-3 stones): adds $10–$15/m².
Why it suits the Cardinia growth corridor.
Hides hairline cracks. Class M clay seasonally moves the slab; textured surface visually breaks up any thermal hairlines that develop. Slip-resistant. Permanent texture year-round — matters when the kids run barefoot to the trampoline. Estate-covenant compliant on every Cardinia Lakes, Officer Town Centre, Arcadia, Pakenham East and Beaconsfield Estate streetscape we’ve seen.
Common pitfalls (and how we avoid them).
- Patchy stone exposure — from uneven retarder application. We use a calibrated low-pressure sprayer, not a hand pump.
- Mud cracking on the surface — from washing off too late. We monitor temperature and time the wash to the hour.
- Sealer flaking after 18 months — from solvent-based sealer that can’t flex with reactive-clay movement. We use a water-based polyurethane.
- Oxide staining — from cheap basalt with high iron content. We source from Boral, BCSands or Mawsons only.
